Public Health Care (full-time study)
The modern concept of the PhD in biomedical and public health sciences (Public Health), which is based on a combination of research and supervised education, was developed in the nineteenth century and has since spread to most of the world. In Europe, doctoral studies represent the link between European higher education and research. According to the Bologna Process, PhD programmes form the 'third cycle' of higher education, following on from the Bachelor's and Master's degrees. However, a fundamental component of the third cycle is the pursuit of advancing learning through original research, which makes the third cycle unique and distinct from the first and second cycles. PhD students (also referred to as doctoral students) are therefore the backbone of contemporary scientific research, as a source of future scientists and the basis for providing the necessary skills for the development of a knowledge-based society. Details can be found, among others, in ORPHEUS/AMSE (2016). Best Practices for PhD Training. Prospects of graduates
A PhD graduate in public health can choose to pursue a career in one of three areas: science and research, teaching and practice. A combination of two or three of them is not excluded.
From the scientific areas, it is mainly applied research, where the doctoral student gains further experience and skills by participating in research teams of European or domestic research and development. Universities are a frequent employer, but gradually research is also being carried out in health care institutions or organisations that provide health-related services. A number of our PhD students have found interesting work in hospitals and are working on, for example, the quality of healthcare. Many have been employed in occupational health organisations, health insurance companies or pharmaceutical companies. We would like to see the National Public Health Service provide more impetus for research, which would certainly attract more doctoral graduates.
There are also ample opportunities in academia for employment as an assistant professor focusing on some component of public health. Also, our faculty expands and maintains the teaching team by selecting from the best graduates.
In practice, the government administration in health or health related fields often employs our graduates. This is also due to innovative leadership programs and integration with professionals that help our students obtain key leadership positions nationally and internationally.</p
